Some Thoughts on Helping Haiti

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and one of the poorest countries in the world. The needs and challenges seem overwhelming, particularly after the massive earthquake that struck in January 2010. Many people look at Haiti and want to help, but wonder “what can I do?”
At the Foundation for the Children of Haiti, we have a suggestion… try “making a difference… one child at a time.”
For the past 30 years the Foundation has proved that it is possible to make a difference by having Haitian caregivers – who know and love their country – provide direct personal care to needy Haitian children. For our organization, “making a difference once child at a time” is not a slogan, it’s a way of life.
The Foundation’s story is one of dedication to Haiti since 1981, and we are committed to continue this work into the future:
The Foundation’s sole focus is Haiti. It does not have activities in other countries – all donations support well established activities in Haiti.
The Foundation was established by, and continues to be directed by, a Haitian woman – Gladys Thomas.
The staff at our orphanages, schools and hospitals are all Haitians. These people are experienced, understand the language and culture of the country, and have complete commitment to Haiti. It is their home... they can’t leave, they can only work for a better tomorrow.
For years now the Foundation has been an approved social welfare institution. It is a key organization in the Haitian social services system.
A few years ago UNICEF assessed all the organizations involved in adoptions and child welfare in Haiti. They concluded that the top two organizations working in Haiti were Mother Teresa’s “Sisters of Charity” and Gladys Thomas’ Foundation for the Children of Haiti.
Hope Hospital is recognized as one of the premier healthcare facilities in Port au Prince; a reputation built by providing first class care since 1994.
During our many years of service, the Foundation has developed good relationships with other aid agencies in Port au Prince, providing additional resources to care for people in need.
