Making a Difference – Changing Lives by Changing Minds
Working to break the cycle of poverty is extremely complex no matter where poverty is found.
Breaking the cycle requires many things, but one critical piece involves changing the way people think about the future, to help them believe that things can be different.
When poverty has been the experience for generation after generation, it is often difficult to believe that something better is attainable.
Social and economic conditions in Haiti are extremely challenging, and the children under our care come from impoverished circumstances. If the only thing children from disadvantaged backgrounds see are substandard homes, substandard schools, substandard hospitals, how will they believe it is possible for them to aspire to something better?
That is why FCH works to show that poverty is not inevitable. There is another way, a way that says, “We will not be satisfied with substandard conditions simply because that’s the way it has always been.”
The FCH view is, "We will not equip our children to build a better future by accepting inadequate housing, education or health care. We can aspire to – and achieve – high standards… like those expected in developed countries."
That is why FCH is committed to not only telling the children that things can change in their lives, but also showing them what that looks like.
George Bernard Shaw, a famous Irish playwright, wrote the following words that capture the Foundation's philosophy:
"There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?"
This philosophy is reflected in all of the Foundation's facilities and activities: Efficient operations built and staffed by well-trained Haitians, delivering high quality care from attractive, well-designed and well-maintained buildings
In this way, everything FCH does demonstrates that Haitians can provide services that communicate the worth and dignity of the people they serve, while showing our children what is possible for them to achieve.
For 33 years the Foundation has proved that its philosophy of excellence does not necessarily cost much more than an approach that says "anything is better than nothing". But it does take vision, creativity, determination, and dedication.
FCH has consistently shown that – even with modest financial resources – when development opportunities are approached with a vision that says, "We can do this", great things happen.
The Foundation's philosophy of asking "why not" is one of the key reasons why the organization has been so effective in its goal of making a difference in Haiti.
We thank all of our friends who share our philosophy, and have faithfully supported this organization that not only believes in a better future for Haiti, but also shows us today what that looks like.
